ohn married an exceptional woman, Minnie Geherke Bennie, who started an organization that was to have a profound influence on the life of the women of early Westmeath Township. Her enthusiasm for the Women's Institute resulted in the W.I. movement's branches in Westmeath, Beachburg and Forester's Falls becoming some of the earliest in the province.
"Mrs. Bennie became secretary of the branch and then secretary of the district continuing in that capacity for eight consecutive years. By many Mrs. Bennie is termed the mother of the North Renfrew District. Mrs, Bennie was presented with a silver tray from the North Renfrew District Institutes in recognition of her long term as District Secretary. the Forester's Fall branch was organized on Sept. 15 by Mrs. Bennie and Miss Brisco." - She and Tom joined in the "Gold Rush" fever and went to Colorado. She would die at age 26 in Leadville Lake, Colorado. HWT
